     Segar chose to draw that way.

     Thurber drew that way, due to increasing eye problems stemming from a childhood accident. They eventually made him totally blind.

   Segar was one of the Greats. When he died, his strip lost direction and purpose with a succession of second-raters like SaggyDrawers Sagendorf. Under Bobby London, it finally went too far,(he was fired) and is now just reprints in a few papers.

       Bobby London’s work on National Lampoon (now defunct) was rather anti-establishment and like robert Crumb. S.Clay Wilson, Moscosco, et al. He was NOT the right choice for a mainstream strip.

         I know Bobby London, he’s one of these cartoonists who does real art and experimentation. I’m not sure if Popeye was a lark for him, a job, or what. He told me once, but I was drunk, so I forget. I really like him and his work, too.
